Dealing with E-mail: What is your strategy?

We are evaluating our options for e-mail as we look forward to Luminis 5 which, as I understand it, will deploy with no e-mail solution built in.

We have been offering e-mail to our students for 9 years now, and there is a strong feeling that we should move away from supporting our own solution, as nearly all students come with their own e-mail address anyway. Faculty and Staff are on a separate e-mail system.

I am interested in your school's solution to email, now and into the planned future.

Luminis Idol 2010!

It's back: Luminis Idol 2010!

After rave reviews the last two years and champions from 2 different countries, we're looking forward to crowning a new winner this year.

Contestant Search Underway

We're looking for contestants to take part in our session. Do you have something impressive you want to demonstrate with your Luminis instance? Great UI? Innovative channel? Maybe you've leveraged your portal for other means - there's an audience for that!

User not in Luminis - talkback to Banner?

Here at BCIT, we imported a subset of our Banner accounts to populate our Luminis database.  One of the reasons we did this is that we have accounts going back to the 1980s and don't really need the vast number of accounts filling up the Luminis LDAP.

However, occasionally we run into problems where someoe comes back to BCIT for a part-time course or is hired as a staff member after not being here for many years.

When Banner fires over an update to their account (assigned to a course, for instance), there is no account to update so it fails.

Any way to count Mail users?

I have been tasked with collecting a number of different stats, and one of them has me a bit perplexed.

I am trying to find out how many users have opened their e-mail.  Not an individual e-mail, but specifically how many people have actually clicked the icon to open their e-mail.

We are using ComExp, and I have looked around the filesystem for any clues - nothing. Looked through the documentation but similarly came up empty-handed.  Tried the Sun forums - nothing.

Error Forwarding Email - MAIL FROM response expected

Recently, we received a support request from a faculty member saying they had trouble sending email to their students.

When I looked into the issue a little further, I discovered it was primarily faculty who had chosen to e-mail students from the Course Homeage.  The students in question had all forwarded their e-mail to gmail.com

An example of an error (I have replaced the student's e-mail with "student-account"):

Secure Message Center - Recommendations?

Here at BCIT, we are beginning to investigate the idea of a Secure Message Center.  Forgive me for detailing the concept, but I'm not sure if this is familiar to everyone:

Various departments would like to communicate with users about services/requirements/acceptance/finance issues that may contain sensitive information.

A message is generated that sits in Banner (or some other system), waiting for the user to log in and retrieve it.

Consolidated Calendar

We are trying to create a consolidated calendar for users in Luminis.  Currently, the system has multiple calendars based on their CRN and we'd like to show a single calendar that contains all their courses in one view.

I know there is a manual way to do this, but I'd like to see an automatic function.

Any ideas?

Desire2Learn (D2L) Web Service Setup

I am trying to set up Luminis to connect to the Desire2Learn Web Service in order to test that events triggered from Banner are coming over.

D2L sent me some documentation that indicates the location for the web service as well as the credentials, but I am not sure how to set this up in Luminis. Originally I figured that I would look through the configman values to see if there was something similar in the WebCT directives, but I didn't find what I was looking for.

Am I looking in the right location or should I be looking elsewhere? LMB? LMG?
