How does Luminis encrypt / unencrypt passwords for other systems?

I'm doing a bit of analysis and was wondering if someone could further clarify my research concerning how Luminis is using the passwords for other systems.

It is my understanding that when Luminis is told the password, it then SHA encrypts the password with the key being Luminis's actual login password. That way nobody can just unencrypt the 1 password unless they know the other.

Is this the way it works?

Configman : Best Practices

Recently, I've begun to manage a tiered environment. In the past I had only handled Luminis setups that were confined to 1 box.

For this maintenance, I'm discovering a very confusing task to be configman settings. Some are specific to a box, some are not, but you can get yourself in trouble if you run:
configman -x config.configman
configman -i config.configman

there is the potential to overwrite specific settings on the other box.

CAS Quick Install

Does anyone out there has a quick, short, or otherwise abbreviated set of instructions for installing CAS? Preferably for a tiered environment.
If so, would you mind posting it here or emailing me a file? [t] at [sandiego] dot [edu] ?

Thank you.

Why Switching?

I've noticed a few recent posts about schools moving away from Luminis (specifically to Liferay & Sharepoint).  I am curious why your switcthing, what your switching to and what else was considered.  Also, what do you expect to lose/re-create because of the switch?

(I'm in no way declaring my school is thinking of switching, I'm just curious of the reasoning.)  I am aware the Luminis & UPortal portals are pretty old school as far as a webportal is concerned.

Award Winning Sites

So, I have a little bit of time to dream of where I'd like to take Luminis.  A while ago, I spoke with someone who told me their portal had received an award at Summitt (I don't think its a very official award).  So I've started thinking, what would an award winning site be like?

So I have two questions for the community
1 - If your portal has received any sort of special recognition, what for?  How did you earn that?
2 - What would a portal be required to have to be "award winning"?  (I realize its subjective.)

Cacheing of Portlet Content?

We've programmed a portlet-channel that calls the banner database and retrieves/displays a students status.

For the most part it works well, but occassionally we get users complaining the that system gave them different data (applicants saying they see an "accepted" status, and then a few minutes later seeing the correct status of "still processing").

Pins not included in realtime event

I posted this same question in the Banner Integration Forum, but did it toward the end of work on Friday... not my best timing ever.  Thought I'd blog it to get it in front of everybody.  Thank for your input, this is a minor emergency.

In our realtime events, the PIN is not getting included in person events.

Maximum Concurrent Logins

Looks like this conversation comes up once in a while. I'm hoping we can nail down a good setting.

This setting only limits the number of users that can be logging in at any given point in time.  Default is 15 which.

What are other schools setting this at?  We are thinking of experimenting at 50, we've heard of schools going as high as 30.

Please let me know what you've set the Maximum Concurrent Logins to and the results you've seen.

thank you.

Digital Measures sample code

I'm in the middle of setting up the Digital Measures single sign on.  The next step requires some administrator input, so while I'm waiting on that I thought I'd post the code that will solve 90% of the problem of SSO from Luminis to Digital Measures.

It looks like 1 or 2 people have searched on this in the past so I hope this is helpful.

Attached are 2 files:

Lumins2Banner JDBC - connection already exist?

I'm creating a channel that queries Banner -- easy enough to do with a JDBC connection.

What I'm wondering is if there is a JDBC connection to the DB that Luminis already has setup and that I can just tap into?  I'd rather do this than have to update the class or a properties file between systems.

Please let me know if you're aware of any abilities like this.
