How to get CR/LF in the link description

I have been trying to get a carriage return/line feed (OK, I'm old. I mean "<br>") in the description of a targetted channel. I've tried ascii codes, html codes, cut-and-paste - nothing works. Is there a way to add some formatting for this description, or am I just SOL.
