Exchange Calendar
Hello everyone, Luminis novice here looking for some advise, We have not yet
even installed Luminis (it should be coming in the next month) and we are
trying to do some planning. My question is, do you all use the calendar
system included with Luminis, or have any of you connected to another calendar
system instead. We currently use MS Exchange, and the thought around here was
that we could integrate that with Luminis instead of using their calendar
system.
Any thoughts?

SunOne Calendar
I've never used Exchange, but most our users dislike SunOne Calendar. Many use their local Outlook then sync to the portal to keep their calendars online so people can see them.
If your users are used to and like Exchange, they will quite likely tar and feather you for pushing SunOne on them. I'd invest the time to integrate Exchange. Then of course I'd encourage you to contribute back your efforts here ;)
I look like a chicken
We tried pushing out the Luminis (SunOne) calendar to our faculty and staff pilot group. Being that we're an Exchange school, they didn't take too kindly to the chutes and ladders one has to navigate through to get the same (nearly the same) functionality that Outlook provides.
The Outlook and Luminis calendars do not synch. I had downloaded and tested the Java Synch tool, but it does not support Outlook 2003. That's not to say that it doesn't work, but once it's done synching the program simply hangs. Additionally unless your user knows what they're doing with the synch program there is a great potential for that user to delete their calendar entries. My advise... stay away from the synch tool.
Our solution?
We are using Microsoft Outlook Web Access for our email client for all faculty and staff. Students will use the Luminis email client.
On campus users (staff / adjuncts and some faculty) will use the Outlook Exchange calendar for business related usage. Faculty will be forced to use the calendar to interact with students because of its tie in with Banner's class Group generation (LDI).
It's not pretty, but we've already tried to show the value of getting rid of the Exchange calendar and being fully integrated with Luminis... and it was a battle we had lost.
