New Luminis Administrator

Aloha everyone,

I'm a new Luminis Administrator. My first project is to upgrade from III.3.3.64 to IV. I'm learning to administer the Luminis platform and have some questions would like to ask:
1) What should I know about before and after upgrade?
2) What are the differences between III and IV?
3) I know there are many mods that I can use but where do I get the information about all theses mods?
4) From your professional experience, what would your hints, tips, suggestions, etc. are for a new Luminis Administrator?

Mahalo,
Arion

A new Lum Admin upgrading Luminis 3.3.3.x to IV? ;>

It’s really a huge job, especially for a new Luminis administrator. Did you at least take SunGard’s LUMINIS ADMIN 101 course?

SunGard has it listed as a 250 hour job and a 6 MONTH migration period from 3.3.3.xxx. I would ask your administration to let you be the local technical lead on the project with the help of SunGard as listed below. Of course, I could be totally off base here. Other’s might say ‘go for it’.

Good luck either way.

Reuben

See this:

Statement of Work – Luminis III to Luminis IV Migration

SunGard Higher Education would provide Licensee with the time and materials hours specified in this Work Order/Proposal toward the provision of the following services to in order to facilitate the migration of Licensee’s current Luminis III environment into a Luminis IV environment. A SunGard Higher Education manager will be responsible for coordinating the resources and schedules for the services.

The Luminis III to Luminis IV Migration Basic Service

 Migration Planning (14 hours): Includes discovery sessions, hardware requirements and assessment
 Test Installation and Migration (80 hours): Includes preparation, remote platform installation, remote LMG installation, Mid-tier reconfiguration, LP III to LP IV migration (w/out email), installation follow-up
 Organizational Training (40 hours): Includes on-site training from Luminis Portal consultant
 Production Installation and Migration (80 hours): Includes preparation, remote platform installation, remote LMG installation, Mid-tier reconfiguration, LP III to LP IV migration (w/out email), installation follow-up
 Project Management (36 hours)

Total effort for basic Luminis III to Luminis IV migration: 250 hours

Optional Services:

 Luminis Platform IV System Admin Training (8 hours): Training on new features of LP IV
 Parallel Deployment (80 hours): Includes setup of parallel deployment in Test and Production environments
 Configuration of Luminis Email (estimate to be determined after assessment)
 Integration with Third Party Products (estimate to be determined after assessment)

Assumptions:

 The basic service does not include email migration.
 It is expected that clients will be upgrading Banner to meet the minimum requirements for Luminis Platform IV so that Luminis Channels for Banner can be implemented if desired.
 If the client does not have Mid-tier configured the Mid-tier reconfiguration hours go to 40 hours for each instance of Luminis Platform.
 If the client has used services from the Integration team to implement SSO connectors, PRU, SAF or E-AEAC, then a review of those services should take place in the discovery and planning phase and include someone from the Integration team for planning and estimates.
 Timeline for a successful migration should allow for six months from start to rollout in Production. This approach allows adequate time to understand differences between Luminis III and Luminis IV, perform adequate testing, make changes to content and deal with integration components.

Wow

Where did you get this SOW? From SGHE, obviously, but is this someplace accessible (UDC)?

Tips and hints

I inherited out Luminis III implementation and am now working on a Luminis IV implementation.

1) Document everything even if it is a small detail.

2) Our Luminis III environment has a production system and a development system. The development system was commandeered for training by our functional offices so it's no longer a true development system. for Luminis IV we have a production system, a training system, a test system, and a development system (Zones are great).

3) LumDev and the people that use it are great.

4) Get to know someone at SungardHE.

5) Go to Summit.

6) Our move to Luminis IV is a major project. We use formal project management methodology. This means a lot of extra paperwork, but it has made us aware of potential "Gotchyas". I can send you our project proposal document so see the detail that went into it.

It is complex job

After a couple of month's migration, I could not create a new channel and they told me that IV.0.0 needs to be upgraded to IV.0.1/2. SSO to our Plus does not work yet. And many ...
