Duplicate tabs with additional roles assigned

Hi all,

We recently had issues with our events processing from the preproduction Banner instance to preproduction Luminis. After fixing these events, we're noticing some users are receiving duplicate tabs associated with the Faculty & Student roles, if they have those roles added in Banner.

We're a bit stumped - it's almost as if the system is seeing them as two separate users lumped into one login, and delivering all sets of tabs for those user roles in their one layout.

We also don't know if this is an issue with Luminis or Banner (the eternal question over here) but I'm hoping maybe someone else has seen this & can help shed some light on the issue?

Luminis and Banner need to agree

Catherine - Hopefully you've already got this resolved. Basically you just have to have Luminis and Banner in agreement about what the roles mean. If Banner can assign two roles to the same person and those roles control layout tabs, then the logic on the Luminis side has to determine which tabs will be displayed. On V3 that is done via the dlm.xml file. On V4 it is done via the fragment manager logic. You do have quite a bit of control within Banner on how the roles are assigned as well. In our case, we suppress the Employee role on the Banner side for students who are also employees, but we suppress the faculty layout on the Luminis side for staff persons who teach a class. We're not yet live for faculty and staff - only for students. So we may still have to change our role logic for some cases.

Hi Bill!

I'm so sorry for the late reply - we've had so many other things happen since this issue. The crazy thing appeared to be that this problem occured with only a handful of people. We did determine that part of the problem was a lack of synchronization between Banner events and a server restart, which was more a mechanical issue (if that makes sense) than anything else. In other words, users whose accounts were gaining an additional role and being sent out as an event on Banner during the exact time the events scripts were being restarted on Luminis were coming in flawed and receiving additional tabs.

We've adjusted our timing between the systems, and so far it's worked out well. Now the hard part is how to restore those users (thankfully, only in our office as our test accounts were the only ones being given additional roles at this point in the semester) without wiping out the entire history of their customization. We have a SR in at Sungard on this issue, but have had a difficult time getting their fix to work. They have a channel called Layout Resetter, tho I have my doubts about its ability to completely restore to the user's original layout. But... these are our own test accounts on our pre-production server, so it's not a huge crisis.

I'll try to post a follow-up as soon as we have the channel solution working from SGHE.
