Hi everyone,
we're looking at the settings in GORICCR for enrollment, term & section restriction, and how that relates to whether students can view the Course Studio channel. I'm concerned about the title of "ELEARNING" on the form in Banner as we are not using integration partner software (we're on the cheap date version of Blackboard & don't have the integration option at our discount/license/platform level. I want to confirm that
a) this form will actually affect the course visibility in the My Courses channel access and
b) the settings (below) that we've chosen will affect the appropriate objects.
Unfortunately at the moment we're not able to get a good load from an extract in our pre-production environment, but we have a few days to confirm a few things & try again. I'm hoping someone out there is familiar enough with the settings to run a quick reply and let me know if my assumptions are correct, that the following settings will result in students NOT seeing their courses in Course Studio until the beginning of the term (currently set to August 18, 2008) but the faculty can get in to Course Studio to do whatever they want when the channel is available to them, and the term is active.
In GORICCR, ELEARNING process (please tell me this applies to Course Studio?!) each entry is controlled by a yes/no flag, resulting in Y=1, N=0. I can also verify these on the xml output.
RESTRICT_ENROLL_BEGIN_TIMEFRM -- set to "Y", assuming this restricts when the enrolled student can see the course at the beginning
RESTRICT_ENROLL_END_TIMEFRM -- set to "Y", assuming this restricts when the enrolled student can see the course at the end
RESTRICT_ SECTION_BEGIN_TIMEFRM -- set to "N", assuming this applies to the visibility/availability of the course in Course Studio, set to N so instructors can access but assuming the above enroll_begin flag will restrict student access
RESTRICT_ SECTION_END_TIMEFRM -- set to "N"
RESTRICT_TERM_BEGIN_TIMEFRM -- set to "N" as we want to work on this term now for registration etc. purposes
RESTRICT_TERM_END_TIMEFRM -- set to "N" as we will want the term data available beyond end-of-term
Any input would be tremendously appreciated. I think we're set up properly, but we have a 3 day window to make an adjustment in case we've misinterpreted a setting.
Thanks!
Catherine
What we've learned
So... after messing with this for a couple of weeks and getting somewhat conflicting input, we have discovered that the ELEARNING settings do NOT (I repeat, do NOT) apply to course studio in terms of when the course information is released, but Sungard does feel this would be a good modification and they have sent out an RPE.
Ah well... back to the drawing board.
Course Tool always available
Just reading your post now.
You're right, once the course is created in the course tool, anyone can see it, including students.
We were a bit concerned about this at the start, but it hasn't turned out to be a problem.
One of the things we did initially was to setup an Oracle trigger on GT_GROUP to automatically create an announcement for new courses saying something along the lines of 'This is course is not yet active. Your instructor will contact you when it is ready....'.
This is possible because the database entry isn't created until the first person (student or instructor) goes into the course. Until that time, the entry only exists in LDAP.
In the past few terms, I think we even removed that fix and it doesn't seem to be necessary.
Bob.
