Luminis, Banner and iPhone integration

Hello All,
Some of you guys are probably interested in developing mobile applications to your student community. For example let the students use their moble phone to register for classes, pay their tuition, select their dorm rooms, check the status of teh campus shuttle etc., Some of you guys probably developed applications that can be used as alerts on the mobile phone. Some of you probably have thought about using iPhone as well for that purposes.

We at USD are trying to develop iPhone applications that interact with our portal, LMS (Blackboard) and our Banner student systems. We had a demo today with Apple Sales Director and she shared an amazing site that Stanford University developed using iPhone SDK -applications that can be accessing using iPhone.

I wanted to share the site with the Lumdev community and see if there are other universities who are either interested in developing iPhone applications and/or already developing iPhone applications on campus. The site is:

We are interested in pursueing further with this option. Could you guys let me know if you guys are considering to move in this direction right now or in the near future?

Will these apps work on a non-iPhone?

I think I know the answer, but I'm open to being wrong ;-)

I can't justify developing applications for a proprietary operating system on any platform, be they computers or phones. In my opinion, mobile applications are best developed for mini Web browsers that are included on most phones these days. Supporting one phone (and, more importantly, one cellular phone company) would cause uproar on our campus, especially since our President is using Verizon.

Just my 2 cents...
