RedHat end of life: Upgrading RedHat from 3 to 4
OK All, here's a fun one that I'm hoping someone else has on their radar and can shed some of their genious.
We've got Luminis 4.x installed on RedHat 3. At the time we installed this was the only version of the OS that was supported. Of course we weren't thrilled about this since RH3 was already a relatively old version, but thats another conversation.
Now we can run Luminis on RedHat 4, but of course, there is a twist. According to SunGuard, if you want to upgrade your RedHat OS, you have to install on brand new machines and replicate your system. That's right, you need to get new machines (or for us, probably set up VM's) install the OS, database, and then Luminis, and then replicate your old production system to the new production system, following the system replication process in the Admin guide.
We wanted to know why we can't just upgrade the OS, and SCT's response was that certain libraries are overwritten when the OS is installed. We asked if we could have a list of these libraries so we can just put back what we need, but they said that they don't have a list, and they havent been able to figure out how to do this process successfully.
We don't want to make assumptions and attribue this to laziness, and I guess it doesn't matter, because our situation remains the same. RedHat support for version 3 expires in October 2010 (http://www.redhat.com/security/updates/errata/). We were trying to decide if we need to upgrade the OS, or if we could wait until Luminis 5 comes out and do everything at once. From what SCT has said, it seems that Luminis 5 is going to come out Q2 of next year, which cuts it a little close. And I dont want to be on the first GA of the new system.
Is anyone else out there running Luminis on RedHat 3? Have you given any thought to how you will address this?
Any thoughts or input is appreciated
Thanks!
Christine

We are on the similar situation
Hey Christine, you are not alone. We are on the similar situation here--our Luminis 4 is on RH3 but virtualized.
Given that new version of Lumins is always buggy, we are not going to upgrade to 5 once it's released. Although it should be enough time for SunGard to release the first patch before RedHat stops supporting RH3.
However, we are now planning to upgrade to RH4. It is not because of the support expiration of RH3 but because of VMware stopped supporting the VMware Tools on RH3 (the virtual NIC will have a chance to stop functioning).
I hope the upgrade will not be buggy...
Thanks,
Arion
Good news
We found out that it's way easier to just upgrade the OS without installing everything from scratch. You can upgrade the RH 3 to RH 4 like upgrading from WinXP to Vista or Windows7, and keep Luminis and its data untouched.
