Google gmail vs Microsoft live

We're planning on moving the student's emails to one of these services and wonder if anyone else chose a preference between the two based on how they integrate with luminis?
We currently have everyone in exchange, and will be keeping the faculty/staff accounts there.

Our Experiences with Microsoft Live

Glad that you asked - see our post at http://www.lumdev.net/node/3272

Basically, single-sign on to Microsoft Outlook Live is more difficult than you'd expect and Microsoft is no help if you're not running Luminis on Windows.  They won't even help us verify our SOAP calls which by their nature are platform inspecific.

From what I understand, SSO to Google has been achieved...

Our Experiences With GMail

We've been on GMail for about three years and we've been very happy with it. Google provides an API for doing single sign on and account provisioning, and developing the code to make this work with Luminis wasn't difficult(see http://www.lumdev.net/node/3218 to get the code).

While I can't claim there has been 0 downtime over three years, there has been far less than what we would have if we had kept email internal and just needed to perform regular server maintenance.

In addition, Sungard has a full blown GMail integration component for Luminis that you can contract for.

We also found many of our students were coming in with GMail anyway, so it was a natural fit.

Gmail

Gmail, Gmail, Gmail. All of the strengths that Microsoft has in email applications revolves around the desktop application Microsoft Outlook. Their web-based interfaces are really weak (they even put you in "lite" mode if you don't use Internet Explorer).

Gmail was designed from day one with a web interface, and it is superior MOWA across the board.

You students will thank you for it.

SSO to Microsoft Live

Here at Missouri State, we too had been providing Exchange mailboxes to all faculty, staff, and students for the past several years.  We recently moved our students to Microsoft Live@EDU.  We were able to set up SSO from Luminis without a great deal of difficulty, thanks to the method developed by St. John's University.  For more information about it, see http://luminislivesso.codeplex.com/
