Twitter Channel how-to?

Very new to Luminis.  Is there a guide for implementing a Twitter and/or Facebook channel?  It thought it would be easy to find info on this but I keep hitting dead ends in the maze.

Thanks!

I'd be insterested also. I am

I'd be insterested also. I am not satisfied with the Facebook portlet that ships with 4.2.1.  Not having a notification section or showing a number of notifications seems like a deal breaker to even put it out there because I know I'll immediately get asked why that isn't there and to add it.

I looked at the portlet code and don't see an easy way to add it.  Though maybe time will allow that later.  I know some schools are using a PHP Facebook channel, but I'd prefer something that runs on the portal hardware either as a channel, a portlet or a JSP app.

Adding Twitter Channel

What precisely are you trying to do? Provide access for individuals to the feeds they follow or publish a specific feed?

Both are easy, but different. This does not have to be done via portal resources. You can use external widgets and post them in a simple targetted content channel.

 I can envision a basic

I can envision a basic pickup-response connector for the twitter.com login form if you want to store 3rd party credentials, but I tend to have the same question/comment as feeneyl. Do you want students to log into twitter via the portal as an additional draw? Or do you want them to follow the institution's feed(s) in a channel?

And just as a side question, how many of you are implementing socialnetworking widgets or access within the portal to your students? What is the view from the administration's side, and is it very different from the view of the marketing department, IS dept., and student association's?

I added a FB channel as one of my first attempts at a GCF connector a couple of years ago, but to date I am the only person who has used it as our policy has been strictly prohibitive of that sort of thing (which I think is a shame.) My attempt only creates a link to FB that stores login credentials - it doesn't automatically log in & show the live feed or anything.

Realize this is an entirely different issue, but I'm interested in your responses. :-)

Twitter feed

Our initial goal is to allow students to view the school's Twitter feed through a channel.  On Facebook, a similar goal.

Twitter using Luminis Universal RSS channel

You can access any Twitter account through a Luminis Universal RSS channel, only filling RSS URL attribute with the Twitter RSS URL, that is provided by Twitter at the public page of tweets.

For example: my Twitter URL is http://twitter.com/ac2ds, the RSS URL is http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/16966252.rss  and you can find it in Twitter page with the link named RSS feed of ac2ds's tweets.

Twitter

That was very helpful.  Thanks for the push in the right direction.

title and description the same

Is there a way with the twitter rss feed to only feed in the title? The link and the information below are the same so it looks rather funny.

you should be able to use the xml transformation channel

you should be able to use the xml transformation channel to do this.  just need to create your own xsl file to present the xml however you choose.

Twitter Widgets

There is another option to make avaliable a Twitter channel that is official from Twitter itself and it is called Widgets (http://twitter.com/goodies/widgets).

Twitter has four types of widgets that can be inserted into a web page only using given JavaScript:

  • Profile Widget: Display your most recent Twitter updates on any webpage.
  • Search Widget: Displays search results in real time! Ideal for live events, broadcastings, conferences, TV Shows, or even just keeping up with the news.
  • Faves Widget: Show off your favorite tweets! Also in real time, this widget will pull in the tweets you've starred as favorites. It's great for moderation.
  • List Widget: Put your favorite tweeps into a list! Then show 'em off in a widget. Also great for moderation.
