customizing error messages in luminis for banner delivered channels

We are upgarding our banner 7 to banner 8 over the MLK weekend. During this entire weekend banner will be down. We are advertising to our students that the portal will be up and running but there will not be any banner functionality available (self service, ssb chanels etc).

We tested to see what the channels would look like in the portal and they are displaying the follwoing error messages:

- Unsupported OID devices
- CPIP connection error

These error messages really do not mean anything to our students. Is there anyway we can customize these messages with a more meaningful error messages - like your information willl not be available during the upgrade etc.,?

When banner is down:

For all the banner delivered channels:
         - If you have them in your layout, the channel title will appear but the actual channel is minimised. I believe this is way better than showing the channel with an error message and we all know that sungard's error message rarely mean anything to the student and/or faculty.

For custom channels:
        - The error message you get is:
External system error:
CPIP notification: loginuser request failed for sctssb

if you need assistance, contact system administrator.

To change this error message navigate to $CP_ROOT/webapps/luminis/jsp/extsys/error.jsp.
Modify this to your heart's content - to give an extremely personalized, meaningful and flashy message if you wish.

For ssb links:
the same as above mentioned (for custom channels)

How did you minimize the

How did you minimize the banner delivered channels for all users? Minimizing the channels as the layout owner didn't work for me.

Thanks.

Banner delivered channels "minimize" upon error

We didn't minimize any of the channels intentionally, but the delivered Banner channels (and probably others developed using similar technology, which we've been trying to avoid due to update issues) just blanked out so they looked minimized when Banner was down.

What Shiva ended up customizing was the error message some other channels threw, including the one we have on our main Welcome tab, so that helped alleviate some confusion.  We also spammed the community with notices that it'd be down so didn't have too many support calls about it.

Hope this helps,
