LDN - Luminis Developer Network

I am being asked to provide statistics on how much use is going on in our group shells, for example, how many course shells have been used in a specific term, how many links have been posted, documents posted, threads posted, etc,

has anyone got any suggestions for how to gather this data in a useful and meaningful way? I know I can pull how many groups have been created and last accessed but true activiy within the groups might be a bit cumbersome.
