Luminis fluid width layout versus static width layout. Why, and what does your institution use?

I'm looking for information that supports some of the advantages or disadvantage with having a fluid vs a static layout for luminis. What is the normal practice, in regards to fixed/fluid width, for your institution? By default luminis provides a fluid layout that allow for the width of the portal and the channels to scaled. However, I've heard arguments that support having a fixed width will allow more control and confidence over the presentation layer and the user experience with the exception that width consideration over developing channels is a little more involved.

Affecting Behavior of Sample Tab

Hi,

In working to redesign user layouts, we have discovered that with our initial deployment in 2004, we renamed the SAMPLE tab to MY TAB on the "usertemplate" account.  Now, there seems to be no way to remove, rename, or change content on this tab for existing users.

We have only  been able to affect new user layouts.  Short of user the Layout Resetter channel to reset all layouts (which is not an option for us), is there any other way to affect the content of the former SAMPLE tab on "usertemplate" for existing users?

Displaying dynamic content (hostname) in layout

I know this should be reasonably simple but I'm very new to Luminis hacking.

We are running our portal in a multi-node environment and for debugging purposes, we would like to display the node's hostname in the footer section of our layouts (as well as on the login pages).

Updating the custom.xsl file to augment the footer is trivial,  the catch is how to dynamically substitute the node's hostname.

U of S Drag and Drop for Luminis 4

Here are the files needed to implement a Drag and Drop theme similar to what we have done at U of S with Luminis 4.  If you're interested, please download the ZIP and take a peek around the files.  It's short on documentation - if I waited until I had full step-by-step instructions for people, then it would not ever get released. :)
