How to do an Email Link in TA for SunMail

Submitted by edingerd on Wed, 10/07/2009 - 11:41

I am trying to have an e-mail link appear in a Targetted Announcement which will open with the built in Luminis Email (SunOne).  A regular mailto link opens with Outlook or whatever email profile is set up on the computer.  This will not work for us.

I found the javascript call (javascript:support('email@domain.edu','Support+Questions'), but when I try to put it in a TA, it just displays the source code and not the html.  We assume this is to prevent injection attacks.

Is there a special method to do this or a way around this behavior of TA?  I can't imagine they have no means of sending a mail link fully using the Portal.

Thanks for any ideas!

Luminis Version:

You could link to an html page that then calls the javascript onload.

I don't think there is any way to include javascript in TA

The html page on the server would look something like:

<HTML>
<HEAD><TITLE>Email Us</TITLE>

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript" SRC="/js/contact.js"></SCRIPT>

</head>

<body onload="javascript:support('emailaddr@domain.edu','Some+Subject');">

</body>
</html>

We are using Sun Java System Messenger Express

To call the mail system to create a new message use this:

http://luminis-server/cp/email/compose?function=new

Caveat -- This should definitely be put into a pop up window to avoid strange behavior in the portal session

Here is an example:

Click <a onclick="window.open('http://luminis-server/cp/email/compose?function=new','','scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,toolbar=yes,width=700,height=500,left=5,top=5');return false;" href="http://luminis-server/cp/email/compose?function=new">here</a>

If you like, you can also pre-load the "To:" and "Subject:" fields:

http://luminis-server/cp/email/compose?function=new&to=email-address&sub...

 We use the Sun mail for student and Outlook for employees. The nice thing about this is that all portal users can send messages using this type of link. The portal identity and email address is picked up automatically. When the recipient replies, the response is fed to the correct email system.

Since our recent portal upgrade, this method will open a pop up window, but will not feed in the address and subject. We are working on a fix. Any feedback is welcome.

Just wondering which version of Luminisyou have upgraded too?

Also, what gets into the pop up window - is it a Luminis page saying "access denied" or entirely external?
