Office 365 Email Migration in Batches Question (Luminis 4.2.3)

Submitted by cmorris on Wed, 09/18/2013 - 13:56

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
We have two single-sign-on (SSO) access areas to our current OWA email system within our luminis portal. One is the email icon and the other a channel box that displays a screen shot of the user's email inbox and acts as a link to it. Both when clicked give the user access to their email account.

Currently we are in the process of switching over to Office 365, but we are not moving everyone over at the same time.

QUESTION:
Is there a way to modify the email icon and channel box to connect only those users switched over to the new Office 365 without interring with the email icon and channel box of those not migrated yet?

All help and words of wisdom is greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Constance

Luminis Version:

Hi Constance,

That's a very interesting question and I can think of a couple of potential solutions but one important question comes to mind: how do you determine if a user has been migrated or not? Is it as simple as looking at roles (students have been migrated but faculty/staff haven't yet) or is it a little more complicated than that?

You could possibly leverage a custom icon evaluator to determine which e-mail link should be displayed for the icon but that still leaves the channel. Is the e-mail channel a custom Java channel?

It sounds like you might want to consider creating a custom JSP that performs the evaluation and sends the user along to the appropriate service. This way you could re-use the same solution for the icon and the channel by pointing them both at the JSP.

I hope that helps!

Thanks,
Tom

Good afternoon Tom,

Thank you for responding to my question. Below are my answers to yours.

"How do you determine if a user has been migrated or not?"
- Our active directory technician knows which groups of individuals have been migrated.

"Is it as simple as looking at roles (students have been migrated but faculty/staff haven't yet) or is it a little more complicated than that?"
- I'm not sure what he does to see that information via active directory. However, I am guessing that it's a fairly painless process to find out as he is supposed to email each group before migration, letting them know they are starting the migration process.

"You could possibly leverage a custom icon evaluator to determine which e-mail link should be displayed for the icon but that still leaves the channel."
- Do you know of a website or posting with instructions on how to do this?

"Is the e-mail channel a custom Java channel?"
No, it is an inline frame channel created using the portal admin area in Luminis. I can modify the URL address to redirect users to the new email, but it changes it for everyone migrated or not.

"It sounds like you might want to consider creating a custom JSP that performs the evaluation and sends the user along to the appropriate service. This way you could re-use the same solution for the icon and the channel by pointing them both at the JSP."

- This sounds fantastic and just what I need. I understand enough to know how to point both to the JSP file/script and where to place such a file on the server. But do you know if anyone has listed such an example with instructions on LDN or another site for a script/file that would perform an evaluation and redirect the appropriate user?

Thank you again Tom for responding! I really appreciate your help.
