New Facebook API

Submitted by admin on Wed, 04/18/2007 - 09:42

We all know that our Luminis implementation can't compete with the popularity of Facebook. If you can't beat them, might as well leverage their data!

Facebook has a new API that allows developers to create channels that use a Luminis user's Facebook data.
It uses a REST-based interface that returns XML or JSON. They offer Java and PHP5 libraries.

Here are some possibilities that I envision...

  • Events
  • Facebook Group Activity
  • Notifications
    • New Messages
    • New Event Invites
    • New Friend Requests
    • Etc...
  • News Feed
  • Personalizing Luminis with a user's Facebook photo

Actually I can think of many more uses, but I think you get the idea.

I'm itching to start developing myself, but alas... the suits have me working on other high priority projects. So instead, I'm going to develop vicariously through you peeps. So get developing!

Check out the test console.

We are looking to leverage the PHP API to put together a facebook channel this summer. We have a proof of concept thrown together, just need some polish. When we get closer I'll try to get the code posted.

Has anyone made any progress here? I think our student involvement folks are going to want to talk about a facebook channel, and I don't want to commit to something impossible.
Thanks.

anyone have a channel yet that they would be willing to share?? don't want to reinvent the wheel.... but itching to get this done.

anyone make any progress on a facebook hook? would love to hear pros/cons, +/-, war stories, etc.... i still want to attempt this, but it keeps falling farther and farther down the list.

SHEd *appears* to have a Facebook channel. I was at a Banner Extender Soultions/Workflow/Documentum demo this morning, and when the presenter pulled up his Luminis account, he had the Facebook news feed as a channel.

Gonna have to ask some questions...
