Why is luminis 5 better than 4?

Submitted by phillies40 on Mon, 12/02/2013 - 09:24

Hi all

We are working on upgrading luminis 4 to 5 but my department director wants to know why since our current system running on 4.3.0.147 (windows 2003 OS) is really great and steady.

Are you upgrading to 5 simply for the sake of upgrading or for better reason? Could any school give us reason(s) to upgrade? thanks so much!

Building a portal on new LP5.1

Submitted by zy001 on Fri, 10/11/2013 - 10:06

Hi guys,
Today, I am starting this block to record and share my journey of building and customising a new LP5.1 platform with all of you.

The goal:
To build a new dev LP5.1 with highly customised web interface, automated user provisioning process with external AD/LDAP/IM application, and highly independent service oriented portal framework to support portlet channels (based on current own framework and uPortal / JSP modle 2 channels).

Cloning of a virtualized luminis server? YES! Now we just successfully cloned lumnis system!

Submitted by phillies40 on Fri, 04/26/2013 - 11:50

Hi all

Has any school virtualized (VMS) its luminis system? how about cloning?

We did both successfully but we did notice some weird things happened between the cloned and original luminis systems.

Examples:

1. When running "cptool list users" in both systems, they show exactly the same when no one is using the cloned one, but later try, the cloned one shows 0.
2. When we make a targeted announcement on the original luminis system, it shows on the cloned on as well!

We ask our network team and DBA, they could not find anything wrong either.

Luminis tomcat-cp on Solaris with LD_PRELOAD=libumem.so

Submitted by novosirj on Thu, 03/28/2013 - 19:56

I'm somewhat surprised that I'm the first person ever writing anything about this on the Internet it looks like (Googling for libumem and Luminis turns up a whopping zero hits), but I think I've found something that substantially improves the performance of Luminis under load (on my 2 CPU test system anyway -- I will have to try this on our 8 CPU production system and see if the results translate) and would like some feedback.

Google SSO

Submitted by kluminis on Thu, 03/07/2013 - 08:39

We would like to have an account dedicated for the single sign-on (SSO) authentication with just the adequate permissions required for SSO to work. What is the required permissions that must be assigned to the google account to allow the authentication?

Why is linked files inside of luminis not secured?

Submitted by phillies40 on Tue, 02/19/2013 - 08:44

Hi all

Some of our school students complain about their privacy violated when their personal data which were stored inside school luminis system (Window 2008 OS, Luminis 4.2.3.34) were searchable in google. (ex: if you type "student composites" in google, hundreds of links shown for numerous schools!)

Has any school done something to prevent this from happening? How could any data stored inside a SSL secured system such as luminis could be accessible outside without any password asked?

Please help, thanks!

Luminis 5.0.4 - Error starting servers (LDAP, etc.) back up after having to stop them.

Submitted by cmorris on Mon, 02/04/2013 - 16:58

I had to take my servers down for a 3rd party back up company to complete some changes. However, upon trying to restart my servers using the method provided by Ellucian (aka: sungard).....

Start up all platform components on a server in proper order with 'lpstart' command.

Or you can start a component by running the script:
. 10-ldap start
. 20-cas-webserver start
. 25-admin-webserver start
. 30-portal-webserver start

Group Membership Limit

Submitted by ricem on Tue, 01/15/2013 - 19:07

I have created an import group. When I populate membership to a group using this imported group, I do not see all the users who were in the import file when I check the group membership listing.

Is there a default limit to the number of members in a group? Is so, what is that limit and is there a configman value that can be changed to increase that limit?

Thanks

Malcolm
